Schistosomiasis in Egypt
نویسنده
چکیده
Hepatitis C is caused by a virus (HCV) and is transmitted by infected blood. It has no epidemiological relationship with schistosomiasis, which is a parasitic disease that is widespread in Egypt. From the 1950s to the 1980s, Egypt tried to control a schistosomiasis epidemic with a program of mass injections of tartar emetic. Largely because of poor sterilization techniques, this program spread hepatitis C to Egyptians in what is believed to be the largest iatrogenic transmission of blood-borne disease in history. Epidemiology of Schistosomiasis in Egypt: Travel through Time: Review
Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by blood flukes (Trematodes) of the genus Schistosoma (S.). It is well documented that schistosomiasis haematobium was endemic in Ancient Egypt. Infection was diagnosed in mummies 3000, 4000 and 5000 years old. Scott was the first to describe the pattern of schistosomiasis infection in Egypt. Schistosomiasis haematobium was highly prevalent (60%) bo...
متن کاملInteraction Between the Neglected Tropical Disease Human Schistosomiasis and HCV Infection in Egypt: a Puzzling Relationship
Egypt has the highest prevalence of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and seropositivity worldwide, and it has been proposed that this enhanced susceptibility to HCV is related to coinfection with schistosomiasis. Although currently, there are no studies regarding the actual prevalence of both human schistosomiasis and schistosomiasis/HCV coinfection evidences strongly support that elim...
متن کاملFurther evidence for association of hepatitis C infection with parenteral schistosomiasis treatment in Egypt
BACKGROUND Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and schistosomiasis are major public health problems in the Nile Delta of Egypt. To control schistosomiasis, mass treatment campaigns using tartar emetic injections were conducted in the 1960s through 1980s. Evidence suggests that inadequately sterilized needles used in these campaigns contributed to the transmission of HCV in the region. To corrobor...
متن کاملCan the freshwater crayfish eradicate schistosomiasis in Egypt and Africa?
Schistosomiasis is a chronic, parasitic disease, infecting more than 207 million people, mostly from Africa, with an estimated 700 million people at risk in 74 endemic countries. One of strategies to eradicate this disease is biocontrol of its vector snail. Lab experiments and field survey have been carried out to investigate the impact and the relationship between the exotic crayfish; Procamba...
